Swiss watch brands are watchmakers whose watches meet Switzerland's legal "Swiss Made" standard: a Swiss movement, cased up and finally inspected in Switzerland, technical development carried out there, and at least 60% of manufacturing costs incurred in Switzerland. At Watch Direct, the Swiss brands run from everyday quartz to automatics: Mondaine, Victorinox, Wenger, Luminox, Philip Watch, Frederique Constant, Ball, Alpina, Edox and Baume & Mercier.

Two words on a dial do more selling than almost anything else in watchmaking. "Swiss Made" signals precision and heritage, and it's defined in Swiss law. Once you know what it promises, you can choose on taste rather than on the label.

What does "Swiss Made" mean?

A "Swiss Made" watch must satisfy the Swiss Federal Council's Ordinance on the Use of "Switzerland" or "Swiss" for Watches (SR 232.119). In short: the movement is Swiss, it's cased up and finally inspected in Switzerland, its technical development happens there, and at least 60% of manufacturing costs are Swiss.

The legal criteria, in plain English

Under Article 1a of the ordinance, a watch counts as Swiss only if all of the following are true:

  • Technical development happens in Switzerland. For a mechanical watch, that means the construction and prototyping of the whole watch. For a quartz or solar watch, it also covers the circuit boards, the display and the software.
  • The movement is Swiss.
  • The movement is cased up in Switzerland.
  • The manufacturer does the final inspection in Switzerland.
  • At least 60% of the watch's manufacturing costs are incurred in Switzerland.

The movement has its own test under Article 2. It must be developed, assembled and inspected in Switzerland, at least 60% of its manufacturing costs must be Swiss, and Swiss-made parts must account for at least half the value of all its parts.

These rules were tightened from 1 January 2017. Before then there was no value test for the watch as a whole, and a Swiss movement needed only 50% Swiss value. The current standard is meaningfully stricter than the one many people still have in mind.

One detail surprises people: the strap or bracelet sits outside the legal definition of a watch, so a Swiss Made watch can wear a band made elsewhere.

Swiss Made vs Swiss movement vs "Swiss inspired"

They aren't interchangeable. "Swiss Made" (or simply "Swiss") is reserved for watches that meet the full standard above. "Swiss movement" means only that the engine is Swiss; the ordinance requires the word "movement" to be spelled out in the same type, size and colour as "Swiss", precisely so nobody confuses the two. "Swiss inspired" isn't a legal category at all.

So read the whole phrase on the dial, not just the first word. A watch that says "Swiss movement" may have been cased and finished anywhere. That doesn't make it a bad watch, but it isn't a Swiss Made one, and you shouldn't pay for a promise it doesn't make.

Why Swiss watches cost more

The standard itself is a big part of the answer. Requiring development, assembly, inspection and most of the manufacturing cost to happen in one of the world's most expensive countries sets a floor under the price. Then come the things you can see: dial finishing, case polishing, sapphire crystals and, at the higher end, the work that goes into an automatic movement. You're paying for where and how it's made, and for a label that is legally enforceable rather than decorative.

Quartz or automatic Swiss watch?

A Swiss quartz watch is every bit as Swiss as an automatic, as long as it meets the ordinance. Choose quartz for accuracy and grab-and-go ease. Choose an automatic if you love the idea of a watch that runs on your own movement and rewards a closer look.

It comes down to how you'll wear it. An automatic left in a drawer between weddings will stop and need resetting; quartz just keeps going. Worn every day, an automatic keeps itself wound. For more, read our mechanical versus quartz guide and our pick of the best automatic watches in Australia for 2026, or browse all automatic watches.

Swiss vs Japanese watches: are Swiss watches worth it?

Japan builds superb watches, and at many price points a Japanese watch offers more features for the money. A Swiss watch is worth it when you value what "Swiss Made" guarantees: where and how it was made, finishing and heritage. Specs alone don't capture that.

It isn't a contest with one winner. Japanese makers can deliver remarkable value. The Swiss case rests on a legal standard you can trust, a long design culture and brands with stories worth telling. If those things matter to you, the premium makes sense; if not, there's no shame in going Japanese. We've looked at the wider question in is buying a luxury watch worth it?

How to buy a genuine Swiss watch in Australia

Buy from a retailer that stands behind what it sells, check the dial says "Swiss Made" (not just "Swiss movement"), and be wary of marketplace listings with vague origins. Every watch we sell is genuine. See our authenticity and warranty page for the details.

Read the dial and case back closely, because the ordinance controls exactly how "Swiss" may appear. Be wary of listings with no reference number or only stock photos, and keep your paperwork. If you buy a new watch at our showroom, we can size the bracelet for you there. To see every brand in one place, start with our Swiss watches collection or the full brands directory. Frequently Asked Questions

What does Swiss Made mean on a watch?

It means the watch meets Switzerland's ordinance on the use of "Swiss" for watches: a Swiss movement, cased up and finally inspected in Switzerland, technical development carried out there, and at least 60% of manufacturing costs incurred in Switzerland.

What is the most affordable Swiss watch brand?

Among the brands we carry, Mondaine, Wenger, Victorinox, Philip Watch and Luminox are the most accessible ways into Swiss Made, each with a clear personality of its own.

Is "Swiss movement" the same as "Swiss Made"?

No. "Swiss movement" means only the movement is Swiss. The rest of the watch may be made and assembled elsewhere. "Swiss Made" covers the whole watch.

Are Swiss watches better than Japanese watches?

Not automatically. Both countries make excellent watches. Swiss Made guarantees where and how the watch was made. Japanese watches often deliver more features for the money. Choose on what you value.

Is a Swiss quartz watch still a "real" Swiss watch?

Yes. If it meets the ordinance, a quartz watch is just as Swiss as a mechanical one. The rules even cover the electronics, which must be developed in Switzerland.

Where can I buy authentic Swiss made watches online in Australia?

Buy from an Australian retailer that guarantees what it sells. Every watch at Watch Direct is genuine. Our authenticity and warranty page explains how we back it.

Can I get my Swiss watch bracelet sized at the Watch Direct showroom?

Yes, for new watches bought in our showroom, which we can size on the spot.
